Roanoke Splits a Pair of Games on Thursday

Game 1 

The Basics

The Lead: Roanoke dropped a 4-3 decision in extra innings to Wittenberg on Thursday morning.

How it Happened:

  • Roanoke jumped out to 1-0 lead in the first as Ruthie Williams hit a two-out single to left center to score Katie Smith
  • After five scoreless innings, RC added another run in the top of the seventh as Williams drove in Smith again with an RBI single through the right side.
  • Wittenberg responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning with back-to-back doubles followed by a single to center to tie the game and force extra innings.
  • In the top of the eighth, Mattie Morris bunted Taylor Slate over to third and Slate scored on a passed ball to take a 3-2 lead.
  • In the bottom of the inning, Wittenberg pushed two runs across off an Abby Baker single to right field to earn the 4-3 win. 
  • Williams led RC with two RBI going 3-for-4 with a double. Taylor Carter recorded two hits in the contest as well. Emily Salsberry (1-1)was credited with the loss in 3.2 innings of work, allowing four runs on six hits. Baker led the Tigers with two RBI while Chelsea Zang (3-1) earned the win in 4.0 innings in the circle allowing two runs and three hits.

The Lead: Taylor Asimakopoulous tossed a shutout as Roanoke topped Northwestern in game two on Thursday.

How it Happened:

  • Asimakopoulous (1-0) allowed only three hits while striking out six en route to the win. Williams went 2-for-2 with one RBI while Taylor Sutherland went 1-for-2 with one RBI.
  • Roanoke got on the board in the bottom of the second as Sutherland ripped a triple down the right field line, scoring Williams to take a 1-0 lead. 
  • Two innings later, Roanoke made it 2-0 as Smith walked and stole second before Williams drove her in with a single to center. 
  • The Maroons retired the next nine consecutive Eagles, allowing only one hit in the final three innings to secure the win.
  • Northwestern had three different players record a hit in the contest while Abbie Nelson was credited with the loss allowing three hits and two runs falling to 1-4 on the season.
