Game 1

Score: Roanoke 3 | No. 13 Christopher Newport 1 (8 inn.)

The Lead: The Maroons scored two runs in the eighth earning the 3-1 win in game one against nationally ranked CNU Sunday.

How it Happened:

  • Roanoke jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Mattie Morris hit a two-out single down the right field line to score Katie Smith
  • After four scoreless innings, CNU evened the game off a double from Savannah Couch in the fifth to make it 1-1. 
  • Becca Wenger started the top of the seventh with a single to right field followed by an one-out single by Rachel Guilliams but the Maroons were unable to push a run across. 
  • Erin Forbes was placed on second in eighth inning and moved to third as Katie Smith reached on a CNU error. Smith stole second to put runners on second and third with no outs. Williams hit a single to center scoring Forbes and Morris tacked on the final run with a single up the middle plating Smith. 
  • Teresa Wagner earned the win going 7.2 innings allowing only four hits and one run to move to 5-0 on the season. Emily Salsberry picked up the save striking out the final batter of the game. 
  • Williams went 2-for-2 with one RBI, Morris went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Guilliams went 2-for-3. 
  • Four different captains recorded hits in game one while Aubrey Bates (5-2) was tabbed with the loss allowing three runs and eight hits in the complete game performance.

Game 2

Location: Newport News, Va.

The Lead: Roanoke dropped a 2-0 decision in the game two of the doubleheader at CNU.

How it Happened:

  • Roanoke was held to two hits as Taylor Carter went 1-for-3 and Katie Smith went 1-for-3. The Captains recorded four hits from four different players as Brittney Walters and Morgan Wooddell each tallied a RBI. 
  • In a game that saw six three-up three-down half innings, CNU got on the board in the sixth in what proved to be the only runs of the game. Rachel Shiflett hit a two-out double to left field scoring Grace Wild and Brittney Walters for the game winner as Roanoke was unable to push runs across in the top of the seventh. 
  • Taylor Asimakopoulos (0-2) was tabbed with the loss allowing two runs off four hits in 5.2 innings. Maiven McKnight (4-0) earned the win with the two-hit complete game outing.

Up Next: Roanoke returns home for an ODAC match-up against Randolph on Wednesday. The doubleheader is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
