RC Splits in First Day of ODAC Softball Championships

The Basics

Score: Roanoke 6, Guilford 3
Records: Roanoke 24-15 | Guilford 29-12
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: Sixth-seeded Roanoke topped third-seeded Guilford 6-3 in the opening round of the 2017 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Softball Tournament in Salem. With the win, RC advances to the winners bracket where it will face second-seeded Randolph-Macon at 7:00 p.m.

How it Happened

  • Teresa Wagner tossed a complete game in the circle allowing just six hits and three runs to improve her record to 9-5 on the season.
  • Roanoke opened the scoring in the second inning when Mattie Morris and Taylor Sutherland singled with one out then each scored on a Becca Wenger double to make it 2-0. Rachel Guilliams then singled home Wenger to push RC in front 3-0.
  • With runners on first and second with two outs in the Roanoke fourth inning Guilliams singled to score Scarlett Sission to make it 4-0 and Taylor Carter followed with her own single to score Brooke Mason and make it a 5-0 game.
  • Guilford strung together three hits to score twice in the home half of the fifth inning as Shelby Helms recorded bloop single in the sixth with two outs made it a 5-3 game.
  • The Maroons picked up a key insurance run in the seventh inning when Guilliams singled to start the inning, moved to second on a Carter bunt and scored on an Erin Forbes single to make it 6-3.

The Lead: Second-seeded Randolph-Macon rallied past sixth-seeded Roanoke 5-4 on Friday night.

How it Happened

  • With R-MC leading 1-0 in the second inning, RC took the lead 2-1 on a two-out RBI double by Becca Wenger to score Taylor Sutherland and Mattie Morris.
  • The Yellow Jackets tied the game in the third inning when Sami Davidson walked to open the inning before being lifted for pinch runner Kayley Reese who moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on an RBI single by Savannah Wood.
  • R-MC loaded the bases with one out in the fifth inning, but RC reliever Emily Salsberry got the final two outs to keep the game tied.
  • In the Roanoke sixth inning, Sutherland and Wenger singled with one out. Brooke Mason singled home Sutherland. Guilliams then singled home Taylor Slate who ran for Wenger and made it a 4-2 game.
  • R-MC rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning scoring three times on three hits, highlighted by a Shelby Hill single to give the Jackets the win.

Up Next: Roanoke will face Lynchburg at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday in an elimination game.
