Roanoke Splits Road Games At Averett

Roanoke split a double header at Averett

The Basics
Game 1 

Score: Roanoke 2 | Averett 0
Records: Maroons 4-1 | Cougars 5-8
Location: Danville, Va.

The Lead: After starting the season 3-1 at the Mountain Mash tournament, the Roanoke College softball team traveled to Averett for a double header with the Cougars. The game would be scoreless after five, RC plated a run in the top of the sixth for a 1-0 advantage. In the seventh, RC added an insurance run as they picked up a 2-0 win in game one.

How it Happened:

  • The Cougars would load the bases in the bottom of the fifth but a ground out to Makayla Austin recorded the final out and the score would remain 0-0.
  • In the top of the sixth, Brooke Trapuzzano singled after a fly out to center. Shanan Hester doubled to right center to plate Trapuzzano before getting caught trying to stretch it to third, giving Roanoke a 1-0 lead.
  • Rachel Sirbaugh doubled to center to start the seventh as Roanoke looked to add to their lead. Sirbaugh advanced to third with two outs and made it 2-0 when she scored on a wild pitch.
  • Averett got a two-out single before Hester got the final out for the 2-0 win.
  • Sirbaugh and Trapuzzano were each 1-2 with runs scored. Jada Karnes went 5 1/3 giving up five hits and striking out three to pick up the win. Hester recorded the final five outs for the save.

Score: Roanoke 3 | Averett 6
Records: Maroons 4-2 | Cougars 6-8
Location: Danville, Va.

The Lead: The Cougars got three runs in the bottom of the second and added two more in the fourth as Averett salvaged a split against the Maroons.

How it Happened:

  • Averett got three runs on four hits, highlighted by a pair of doubles, in the bottom of the second inning.
  • Two innings later, the Cougars added to their lead with a two-RBI double to left field making it 5-0.
  • In the top of the sixth, Roanoke put up three runs.  Trapuzzano singled in Gabby Fox.  Karnes doubled in a run.  Austin singled in Karnes.
  • Averett scored an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Up Next: Roanoke goes on the road to face Christopher Newport University on Saturday March 20th.  First game at 1:00 pm.
