Women's Tennis Sweeps Bridgewater and Randolph-Macon in ODAC Action
SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke swept Bridgewater and Randolph-Macon in two ODAC matches this week. They improved to 8-4 overall, 6-2 in ODAC play to move into fourth in the conference standings.
The Maroons escaped Bridgewater with a 5-4 victory on Wednesday afternoon. Laura Dodson (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)battled an illness through her match in #1 singles to win 6-3, 6-4 for her third-straight win of the season. Kelsey White (Providence, RI, Wheeler)handily defeated Olivia Stone, 6-0, 6-0 in #2 singles while Corbin Leitch (Richmond, VA, Steward School)went three sets before claiming the match in #3 singles, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. It was her team-best sixth-straight win of the season.
The duos of Dodson/Leitch and White/Kristin Nagy (Torrance, CA, Torrance High School)rallied to win, 8-6 in #1 and #2 doubles, respectively. The Maroons are now 2-1 on the road this season, all decided by a single match.
Roanoke won their third-straight match of the season, 8-1 against Randolph-Macon on Friday afternoon. The Maroons have now won seven of their last nine outings. The women are 5-1 this season at home.
In doubles action, the duo of Dodson and Leitch won their third-straight match, 8-0 over the Yellow Jackets in #1 doubles. It was the second time in the last three matches they have shutout an opponent. #2 doubles partners Nagy and White won their sixth match of the season, 8-2 against R-MC. It was their third-straight win together as well. Ruth Condro (Bel Air, MD, C. Milton Wright)and Caroline Hunter (Salem, VA, Salem)knocked off Chelsea Jones and Jane Oh in #3 doubles, 8-6. For Condro, she improved her doubles mark to 3-1, 1-1 with Hunter on the year.
A healthy Dodson cruised in #1 singles against Martha Vlahakis, 6-0, 6-0, to improve to 9-3 on the season at the top-position. White's 6-1, 6-1 decision in the #2 slot improved her mark to 8-3 this spring. Leitch improved to a team-best 10-2 record, 6-1 in the ODAC with a 6-0, 6-2 win in #3 singles. Tessa Bramhall (Concord, MA)(#5 singles) won her fourth match of the season, 6-0, 6-2 over Reba Sledd while Haley Parker (Martinsville, VA, Martinsville)earned her first win of the season in the final singles match, 6-3, 6-3.
The women will return to action on Monday, April 12 as they travel to Greensboro, NC to take on Guilford College. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
