The Short Story: The Maroons picked up a critical 5-4 conference victory at Bridgewater on Friday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Roanoke assumed a 2-1 lead through doubles play. Halle Fernstrum and Julia Bassett beat Emma Nesselrodt and Ryan Roeber 8-2 at the top spot, and Lia Streibich and Victoria Rios downed Malena Hoover and Grace Knighton 8-7 (7-5) at #2. The Eagles grabbed a point at #3 doubles, where Emily Daigneault and Emily Wylie triumphed over Zane Maiden and Emma Johnson by an 8-1 count.
- Wins at #2 and #3 singles extended the Maroons' advantage. Streibich rolled past Daigneault 6-1, 6-1 at #2, and Bassett defeated Hoover 6-4, 6-4 at #3.
- Nesselrodt's 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Fernstrum at #1 singles pulled BC to within 4-2.
- Rios clinched the match at #4 singles, overcoming Roeber 7-6 (8), 6-3.
- Victories for the Eagles at #5 and #6 singles provided the final margin. Wylie outlasted Maiden 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 at #5, and Kaci Pitsenbarger defeated Maddie Morrell 6-3, 6-0.
- The win has major implications in the ODAC Tournament race, as the two teams entered Friday's match tied for seventh in the conference standings.
