Women's Tennis Fares Well at the Fall ODAC Championship
The Roanoke College women's tennis team attended the ODAC Fall Championship, Oct 10-11. The event was hosted by Hollins University.
In the singles competition, Laura Dodson (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring) was the only player from Roanoke the make it to the finals. She was defeated in the finals of the first flight by Blair Brzeski from Washington & Lee (6-1, 6-0).
Lucy Webb (Glastonbury, CT, Glastonbury) fought hard for consolation in the third flight but was beat by Morgan McGee from Bridgewater. Caroline Hunter (Salem, VA, Salem) fell to the same fate in the fourth flight. However, the next three flights saw the capture of the consolation. Haley Parker (Martinsville, VA, Martinsville) won consolation in the sixth flight, defeating Caitlin Clare of Randolph College 6-4, 6-1 and Morgan Howard of Guilford College 8-1. Ruth Condro (Bel Air, MD, C. Milton Wright) played a long match against Shantel Rivera of Randolph College but pulled ahead 6-4, 6-7, 7-3 and then went on to defeat Jackie Goldberg from Guilford. Morgan Thomson (Chester, VA, Home Schooled) beat Porsche Pugh from Randolph 7-5, 6-2.
Three of the women's doubles made it far enough to go to consolation in the Championship. The combination of Condro and Thomson defeated a team from Sweet Briar and then Hollins University, 8-2 for each game. They were the only doubles team from Roanoke to win consolation.
The women will not see action again until the Spring season, 2010. Their opening match will be against Ferrum College.
