Roanoke Women's Tennis Tops Sweet Briar College 7-2
The Maroons found themselves back in the winning column after defeating the Sweet Briar Vixens 7-2 Wednesday afternoon. Roanoke moved to 4th place in the ODAC with a record of 7-3, while Sweet Briar is currently 6-4, dropping them to 5th in the conference. The women improve to 9-4 on the season, while Sweet Briar find themselves at 11-4 overall.
In singles action, #1 Laura Dodson (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring), who has consistently dominated the court for the Maroons this season, has now won her last five straight matches, with her fifth being a 6-4, 6-2 defeat over Sweet Briar's Krista Maldonado. At the #2 singles spot, Corbin Leitch (Richmond, VA, Steward School) shut down the competition with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Ansley Smith. Kelsey White (Providence, RI, Wheeler), #3 singles, beat out Jessica Bronner 6-3, 6-0 to give the Maroons a 3 match lead over the Vixens. In the #4 slot, Casey Wojtera (Radford, VA, Radford) won her second straight match of the season against Emma MerrittCuneo, with a final match point of 6-4, 6-0. Kim Naylor (Springboro, OH, Springboro High School), now on a three game winning streak and currently #5 in singles, added to the Maroons success after she upended Andra Brumfield, 7-5, 6-3.
In Doubles competition, power house duo Dodson and Leitch (#1 doubles) sniped the competition with an 8-5 win over Maldonado and Bronner. White and Nagy also came up victorious over Caskey and Brumfield in an 8-5, final.
Sweet Briar only managed to steal two wins from the Maroons on the day. Caskey (SBC) slipped past #6 Kate Robinson with a 4-6, 4-6 triumph, and in doubles, Smith and MerrittCuneo came away with a 7-9 win over #3 slot Hunter and Wojtera.
The women will be back in action April 14th, as they face the Sweet Briar Vixens once again, in the ODAC championships. The Maroons take home advantage, as the match will be played on the Roanoke College tennis courts located on the Elizabeth Campus at 12:00 p.m.
