Women's Tennis Claims Ferrum Fall Tournament Championship
SALEM --- The Roanoke College Women's Tennis Team won the Ferrum Fall Tournament this weekend at Skeens-Burrows Tennis Complex. Coming off an 8-1 victory over Southern Virginia on Sept. 13, The Maroons were joined in the fall tournament by Randolph, Lynchburg and tournament-host Ferrum.
The women claimed the tournament title by scoring a total of 36 out of a possible 38 points. They won eight of the nine flights, all but #5 singles in which RC finished second and third in that division.
Laura Dodson (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring) defeated Lynchburg (8-4) and Randolph (8-1) to win the #1 flight. Corbin Leitch and Jennifer Antoszyk (Charlotte, NC, University of Nebraska Independent Studies) handily won the #2 and #3 flights, beating their opponents, 8-1 and 8-0.
Haley Goodes (Salem, VA, Glenvar ) def. Ferrum (8-0) and Lynchburg (8-3) in the #4 flight, while Lauren Marszal (Meriden, CT, Francis T. Maloney) topped Lynchburg in both matches to claim the #6 spot in the tournament. The Maroons went on to sweep all three doubles matches.
The women will compete in the ITA Regionals in Fredericksburg, VA on Sept. 24-25.
