Women's Tennis Tabbed Second in 2015 ODAC Preseason Poll

Women's Tennis Tabbed Second in 2015 ODAC Preseason Poll
FOREST, Va. --- Washington and Lee University commands the top of the 2015 ODAC Women's Tennis Poll, collecting all but one first place vote on the way to 121 points to lead the annual survey of the league's head coaches.  Roanoke College sits second with 108 points, while Randolph-Macon College and Bridgewater College are tight for third with 94 and 90 tallies, respectively.  Emory & Henry College received the remaining first place vote while holding down the fifth spot with 75 points.

Under the tutelage of new head coach Daniel Ragsdale, the Maroons proved to be even more successful in 2014. The Maroons finished the season by setting a new school record for wins with 16. Roanoke also advanced to the ODAC Championship match for the second year in a row, and the second time in school history. The Maroons started out the season 8-0, which is the best record to start to a season in program history. It was also the best stat by any Roanoke College head coach in their first year at the helm. The Maroons didn't lose a single match to an NCAA Division III opponent until the last match of the season against #20 Washington & Lee.

The Maroons return three All-ODAC performers from the 2014 season to the courts in 2015. Second Team All-ODAC player Emily Henderson played predominantly in the #3 spot for the Maroons last season, putting up a record of 10-2 as the #3 player. She also went 2-0 when playing as the #2 seed. Henderson won her first six matches in a row, as well as winning six of her last eight matches. She also played #2 doubles for the Maroons with another All-ODAC selection in Reed Kegel. The Pair went 10-3 in #2 doubles and 2-1 at #1 doubles. Their performance at #2 doubles earned them Second Team All-ODAC Doubles honors.

Kegel also won All-ODAC honors for being the Maroons #4 singles player. She boasted a record of 7-4 from that position, but also went 3-0 when playing as the #3 singles slot. Kegel won her first six matches in a row, then finished the year winning four of her last seven, with two losses coming against Washington & Lee. Also returning is Roanoke's #6 All-ODAC selection in Haley Goodes. Goodes finished the year with a record of 10-2, including a 7-1 mark at the #6 position. She also was 1-0 when playing as #2 and #3 singles, so the versatility of Roanoke's roster is becoming evident. Goodes went 7-1 in her last eight matches, and one of the matches she lost in 2014 went to a third set.

While three All-ODAC players are coming back, the Maroons are returning 11 players from the 2014 team to the squad this season. The team combined for an individual win total of 71-34 last year, and a 38-16 record in doubles play. Returning are Emma Barker, Brianna Carroll, Lydia Dey, Kaitlyn Diskerud, Elli Fields, Alexandra Martin, Kristen McDowell and Briell Smith.

The Maroons open the 2015 tennis season at Christopher Newport University to play Methodist, Christopher Newport and ODAC opponent Sweet Briar. Methodist's women were picked to be the top team in the 2015 USA South Preseason Poll. The Monarchs went 22-3 in 2014, and advanced to the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Methodist is ranked #8 in the Atlantic South preseason poll. Christopher Newport is ranked #15 in the Atlantic South preseason poll as well but finished the 2014 season with a record of 10-11, but went 5-1 in conference play.

Roanoke will continue the early test by taking on #20 Washington & Lee on February 22nd in Lexington at 4:00 PM. Roanoke will have its home opener against Bridgewater College on February 27th at 3:00 PM. The Maroons will then travel to Hilton Head, SC to play in four Spring Break matches. Roanoke will take on Elizabethtown, Wartburg, Mount Union and Misericordia, between March 3rd and March 6th. Roanoke returns to Virginia to play Lynchburg on March 19th before a two-day home stand against Shenandoah and Guilford on March 21st and 22nd, respectively.

After two away matches against Virginia Wesleyan (3/27) and Randolph (4/3), the Maroons will close out the 2014 regular season with three straight home matches. Roanoke will host Hollins on April 6th, then back to back matches against Randolph-Macon on April 18th and Emory & Henry on April 19th.
