At Roanoke College, he excelled in football, baseball and was selected to the All-State basketball team.  He was captain of the 1913 basketball team.

Since 1920, Norman has been active in the promotion of athletics in the state of South Carolina.  In mid-thirties, he was a member of the National Basketball Rules Committee.

In 1968, he was selected to the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame and cited as the person most responsible for the growth and success of the athletic programs at Furman University, the University of South Carolina, The Citadel, and Clemson University.
