A four-year member of the Monogram Club, Patrone played varsity ball during his career at Roanoke College and set records on the football field as a back. A tough-nosed player, he played the entire 1934 season with a broken ankle bone.
In 1935, he was named captain of the football squad and voted to the All-Conference and All-State teams.
He was an outstanding third baseman during his career, playing four years of varsity baseball. In 1933 and 1934, he was a member of the college boxing team.
