RC Claims Dick Leftwich Classic With 81-55 Win Over Ferrum

The Lead: Roanoke scored a 81-55 win over Ferrum in the championship game of the 2016 Dick Leftwich Classic  Saturday in Salem.

How it Happened

  • Tournament MVP John Caldwell scored a  game-high 18 points in the win and was one of four Maroons in double-figures.  Joey Miller had 12 points while Brandon Harrell had 10 points off the bench for the Maroons as well.
  • Josh Freund scored 10 points to go along with six rebounds, while all-tournament team choice Eli Sumpter chipped in with eight points.
  • Ferrum was led by Josh Grimard who was named to the all-tournament team along with Josh Dudley who had 13 in the loss.
  • RC shot 50.8% for the game, making 31-of-61 shots, including 11 three-pointers. 
  • The Maroons held Ferrum to 18 points in the first-half, allowing just seven made field goals on 23 attempts.
  • Roanoke held a 20-13 lead with just under six minutes to in the first-half. A Joe Mikalauskas bucket sparked what would prove to be a 20-5 run to end the half that was capped by a Miller three-pointer with under a minute to play.
  • RC's lead reached 30 in the second-half when a Mikalauskas lay up made the score 63-33 with 12 minutes to play.
