The Lead: Roanoke shot a blistering 64.6% from the field and got 28 points and 10 rebounds from John Caldwell to lead the Maroons to an 89-76 win over Averett in the opening round of the Swarthmore Holiday Tournament.

How it Happened:

  • The Maroons made 31-of-48 of their shots from the field for the game, including a 15-of-23 mark from beyond the three point line.
  • Caldwell, who set a career-high in points for the second straight game, made 10-of-13 shots from the floor, five of which were three-pointers.
  • Caldwell was one of four Maroons in double-figures on the night. C.J. Miles came off the bench to score 13 points, while John Fitchett scored 12 points off the bench as well. Joe Mikalauskas had 11 for the Maroons in the win.
  • RC assisted on 18 of its 31 made shots. Eli Sumpter had seven assists and Caleb Jordan dished out five.
  • Roanoke led 34-32 with 3:52 left in the first-half when Joey Miller drained a three-pointer and sparked what would prove to a be a 17-6 run, with a Miles three-pointer sending RC to the dressing room with a 51-38 lead.
  • Averett chipped away during the second-half and was able to cut the RC lead to 68-66 following a T.J. McCallister jumper with just under nine minutes to go in the game.
  • RC went on a 10-2 run, pushing its lead back to 10 when a Caldwell bucket made it 78-68 with six minutes to play.
  • AU would cut Roanoke's lead to 78-72 but the Maroons would score nine of the next 11 points to seal the win.

Up Next: Roanoke will play in the championship game at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday against Rowan which knocked off host Swarthmore 92-84 to open the day.
