Roanoke Tops Coast Guard 81-78 in First Day of Cregger Tournament

The Lead: Roanoke topped Coast Guard 81-78 on Friday night in the first round of the 2016 Cregger Tournament in Salem.

How it Happened:

  • John Fitchett led RC with 21 points on the night and was complimented by C.J. Miles who came off the bench to score 20. John Caldwell scored 19 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
  • The Maroons shot 43.5% for the game as they made 27-of-62 shots, including 11 three-pointers. RC assisted on 15 of its 27 baskets with Eli Sumpter and Caleb Jordan each recording seven assists.
  • Coast Guard was led by Max Lampe with 21 points on six made three-pointers. Justin Kane added 11 points, while Luke Daniels had 10. Coast Guard shot 44.6% for the game and were 14-of-31 from beyond the three-point line.
  • Roanoke took a 7-0 lead on a three-pointer by Fitchett before Coast Guard rallied and tied the game 9-9 just under five minutes into the game.
  • With RC leading 15-14, the Maroons went on an 11-2 run that was capped by a Jordan layup that made the score 26-16 with 7:47 to go in the half.
  • The Maroons led 34-25 at halftime then stretched that lead to 13 points at 45-32 early in the second-half following a Miles bucket.
  • Coast Guard rallied, using as 16-3 run to tie the game at 48-48 with 10:15 to play in the game.
  • The game would feature four different ties over the next six minutes, the final of which came when Sumpter scored to make it 61-61 and spark what would prove to be an 11-5 spurt by the Maroons with Miles layup extending the lead to 72-66 with just over three minutes to play.
  • With the score 77-71 with just over 30 seconds to go, Lampe connected on a four-point play to cut the RC lead to 77-75.
  • Miles and Caldwell would each make a pair of free-throws to push the lead back to six before Adrian Chuquillangui made a three pointer with under 10 seconds to go.
  • RC missed both free-throws on its ensuing possession and Coast Guard had a chance to tie the game but its three-point attempt fell short at the buzzer, giving RC the win.
