The Lead: C.J. Miles scored 29 points in leading Roanoke to a 100-93 win in the championship game of the 2016 Cregger Tournament in Salem.
How it Happened
- Miles scored 29 en route to the tournament's Most Outstanding Player honor. He was joined in double-figures by John Caldwell who had 23, John Fitchett who had 14 and fellow all-tournament honoree Eli Sumpter who finished with 13 points and six assists.
- Anderson was paced by all-tournament choice Trevor Lucas who had 31 points. Stanley Duncan had 26 points and all-tournament selection Cole Hartman had 18.
- The Maroons shot 54.7% for the game, making 29-of-53 shots from the floor, including 10 three-pointers. RC also converted 32-of-39 attempts from the foul line. Anderson made 34-of-61 field goals and knocked down 10 three-pointers.
- With RC in the lead 25-23 with just under nine minutes to play in the first-half, the Maroons went on 10-0 run that was capped by a Sumpter jumper that made it 35-23 with 6:32 on the clock.
- Anderson managed to cut the RC lead to 44-38 at the break before Lucas opened the second stanza with a three-pointer to make the score 44-41. With the score 46-43, RC used a 15-4 spurt, pushing its lead to 14 on a Miles bucket with 15:45 to go in the game.
- The Ravens fought back and made the score 67-64 with 11 minutes to play following a Malik Laffoon basket before the Maroons scored seven of the next nine points to push their lead back to eight points.
- Anderson chipped away and the Maroons found themselves holding a 92-91 lead with under a minute to go. The Maroons would force two missed shots, cause a turnover and connected on 7-of-9 free-throws in the final 56 seconds to seal the win.
