A transfer from Bluefield College, French was one of the most versatile athletes to wear the maroon and gray.  Earned six varsity letters in two years in football, basketball, and baseball.

Alternate captain of football and basketball teams.  In 1941, French was captain of the baseball team.  Nicknamed "Timber" because he was the tallest man on basketball team.  In 1941, French's basketball team won the mythical "Little Six" state crown.
