Rice played football and basketball during his years at Roanoke.  The "...fleetest man on the varsity," and his fleet feet and good hands enabled him to lead the team in pass receiving and punt returning his senior year.

Also in Rice's senior year, he led the basketball squad in scoring.

After Roanoke, he remained active in sports - coaching football, basketball, and baseball at Pulaski High School.

He played a big role in the sports and spiritual lives of young men by heading a drive to build a $400,000 YMCA facility.
