A three-year member of the Monogram Club, Davenport was an outstanding athlete and one of the finest trackmen and cross country runners ever to perform in Virginia. 

Davenport took 55 first-place finishes during his career and was the first athlete at Roanoke College to run the two-mile race below 10 minutes in 1949.

A captain of both the track and cross country teams, Davenport was one of the most well-liked and respected athletes on campus.

A physics major at Roanoke, Davenport has since shown active interest in conservation and amateur botanical and ornithological groups.
