A member of the Roanoke men's lacrosse team that made a run to the 1983 national championship game, McKenzie was a two-time All-American defenseman. As a senior in 1984, McKenzie became the fifth Roanoke defenseman to earn First Team All-American honors. In 1983 and 1984 he also was a First Team All-ODAC pick and in 1983 earned the first of his two All-American awards.  In his senior season, McKenzie was the team's leader in groundballs and recorded 223 in his Roanoke College career. He was also the team's Paul Griffin Award winner in 1984, rewarding his dedication and leadership to the Maroons. 

In his four seasons with the Maroons, McKenzie helped the team to a 36-22 overall record, four ODAC championships, and three trips to the NCAA tournament.
