A guard on the basketball teams of 1937-39, he was one of the sharpshooters of the "Five Smart Boys." They went 40-5 in a two-year span which gained the program national attention as they played in the National Invitational Tournament, which was bigger than the NCAA Tournament at that time.

He earned All-State honors in 1939, Honorable mention NIAA, and National Invitational Tournament team in 1938.  In addition to his basketball accolades, Wagner was an outstanding second basemen on the Roanoke varsity for three years.

He was a member of the Monogram Club and President of the Student Athletic Council in 1939.
