After leading the most successful teams in the history of Roanoke golf, Caldwell went on to a professional career in golf.

During his career with the Maroons, Caldwell earned Division III first-team All-American honors in 1981.  He qualified for the NCAA Division III golf championships in 1980 and '81.  Also led Roanoke to a second place team finish in the 1981 NCAA golf championship in Pinehurst, N.C.

He tied for third individually in the 1981 NCAA Championship after competing in Division II a year earlier.  The 1981 ODAC Golfer of the Year led the Maroons to the ODAC team title.  Helped lead the Maroons to the College Division of Virginia State Intercollegiate Championship in 1981, as Roanoke captured the state team championships in 1980 and '81.

Caldwell finished first in the Roanoke Valley Amateur Golf Tournament in 1980 and turned professional in 1981.  During his pro career, he won the U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying Golf Tournament in 1985 and qualified for the Anheuser-Busch Classics Tournament in 1986.
