In his college days, Cavanaugh was a "speed merchant." He competed in track four years, running the 100 yard dash, the 220, the 440, the half-mile, and the mile relay
He captained the track team his senior year and was named Named the "Outstanding Senior Athlete" for 1961-62.
Mason Dixon champion in the 440 and had the same two honors in the Little Eight Conference plus the broad jump title. His time in the 220 set a record at Roanoke College. His mile relay team set a state record.
Cavanagh's track career went with him to the service, where he competed for the Quantico track team.
