One of the finest basketball players ever at Roanoke College, Sperger was known for his offensive abilities.  H starred for four years and captained the squad the latter years of his career.  He scored a career high 35 points in a single game as a senior in 1957.

Sperger was selected to the Virginia All-Star and Second-Team All-Mason-Dixon Teams and received honorable mention Little All-America honors in 1957 in addition to being awarded Player of the Year for the Little Eight Conference and the State of Virginia.

He received the nickname "Poker Face" by sports writers who admired his serious attitude.
