Spruhan came to Roanoke in 1912 and coached football, baseball and basketball for the Maroons.  His teams compiled numerous state and regional championships. In basketball, he was 64-20 in his first seven years, claiming the Virginia State Championship with an undefeated record of 9-0 in 1916.  In 1919, Spruhan led the Maroons to both a Virginia State and Mid-Atlantic Championship.  He almost immediately put the Maroons basketball program on the map.

From Roanoke College, he went to VMI where he coached the famous “Flying Squadron” before returning to Salem in 1921.  For the next nine years, he continued to produce championship teams.  He demanded nothing less than perfection from his players and set the example for them to follow.

He was commissioner of the Southwestern Virginia Football Officials’ Association at the time of his death.
