Roanoke Competes in Georgia

The Basics:

The Lead: The Roanoke golf team made the trip to Georgia to compete in the, 22-team, Royal Lakes Invitational. The two-day event was held at the Royal Lakes Country Club and contested over the par-72, 6717 yard layout. Roanoke fired an opening round 301 to put themselves in contention, 12th with 18-holes left to play.

How it Happened:

Day 1:

  • TJ Whelan paced the Maroons with a 2-under par 70, placing the sophomore in a tie for 6th in the 124 golfer field. Fellow Sophomore Palmer Cuny finished with a 2-over par 74, giving Roanoke a pair in the top 35.
  • Freshman Brett Chodos played the final 15 holes at 1-over par and carded a 77 while senior Justin Grenier rounded out the scoring for Roanoke with an 80.
  • Roanoke would find themselves in 12th place in the 22 team field that featured 10 of the top 50 teams in the nation.

Day 2:

  • Whelan would finish the tournament at even par after a second round 74, placing the sophomore in the top 15.
  • Cuny carded a second straight 74 and no one in the tournament had more pars than the second year golfers 27.
  • Grenier improved two strokes with a 78, moving him up three spots in the overall standings wile Chodos rounded out the scoring for the Maroons.

Up Next: Roanoke will travel to Suffolk to compete in the 2022 Virginia State Golf Association (VSGA) Intercollegiate. The Maroons look to improve on last year's third place finish.
