Location: Jacksonville, N.C. (Paradise Point golf Club – Gold Course)
The Lead: For the 50th time, The Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune played host to the Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate. The three-day event was held at the Paradise Point Golf Club and was contested over the par 72, 6,851-yard Gold Course layout. Roanoke, 70th, competed against nine of the top-50 teams in the nation in the 20-team field. Guilford college (4) defeated Oglethorpe (9) in a two-hole playoff to win the event with Christopher Newport (2) coming in third. The Maroons would finish the event in 13th place.
How it Happened:
Day 1:
- RC fired an opening round 312, while battling high winds and rain
- Sophomore TJ Whelan was completed the round with an even-par 72. Senior Justin Grenier posted a 6-over par 78 while Palmer Cuny carded an 80.
Day 2:
- Grenier paced RC with a 77 and Whelan carded a 78. Cuny improved with a 79 while senor Daniel Poff rounded out the scoring with an 83. The Maroons struggled to conquer the wind and cold, slipping down the standings with a 317.
Day 3:
- The final round would see Roanoke rebound with a 303. Whelan finished with a 76 to finish 31st in the field of 100 golfers. Poff led RC with a 2-over par 74. Will Clary matched Whelan with a 76 while Cuny and Grenier matched cards with a pair of 77's, giving RC all five golfers in the 70's.
Up Next: For the final time during the 22-23 regular season, the Maroons will head to Williamsburg to compete at eh 2023 Shipbuilders Glenn Heath Memorial tournament, April 16-17.
