The Lead: The Roanoke College golf team traveled to Suffolk to compete in the 73rd annual Virginia State Golf Association (VSGA) Intercollegiate. The 10 team tournament was held at the Sleepy Hole Golf Course and contested at par 72, over the 6,500 yard layout. The Maroons took and two-shot lead into the second day and finished the event with a 20-stroke win.

How it Happened:

Day 1:

  • RC would take the lead after day one with a team score of 307, two shots clear of second place Southern Virginia.
  • Senior Will Clary carded a 1-over par, 73, to pace the Maroons and fin himself in third over in the 63 golfer field. Fellow senior Daniel Poff, competing as an individual would finish the day in a tie for fourth with an opening round 75.
  • Sophomore TJ Whelan got the event started with a 4-over 76 while Brett Chodos and Palmer Cuny each posted rounds of 79.

Day 2:

  • On a cold and windy day two, Roanoke would post a 304 for a two-day total of 611. No one would come any closer than 10 strokes of the Maroon's total as Roanoke pulled away for a 20-stroke victory over their nearest competitor.
  • Cuny led the day with a 75 followed closely by Whelan and Chodos at 76. Clary fired a 5-over 77 to round out the scoring for the Maroons.
  • Clary would find himself in a tie for the individual crown when we and Michael thomas (CNU) finished with identical 150's. The two would head to a playoff where Thomas would win the first extra hole to claim the title with Clary finishing runner-up.
  • Whelan (152) would finish 4th while Cuny ended the event in 9th, giving RC a trio in the top 10. Chodos was T13th while Justin Grenier (T20th) put all five Maroons in the top 20 overall.
