Baker earned six varsity letters during his career at Roanoke and was a member of the Monogram Club. Track and cross country allotted him two monograms, but basketball was his real love.
In 1964, he was the team's best shooter and leading rebounder en route to being selected to the Virginia All-State team in 1964.
Baker was also voted Roanoke College's Most Outstanding Athlete, in 1964.
After graduation, he continued in sports as a coach and athletic director.
