Member of the track team, In 1960, Beals set a new record for the relay and helped the team in the Little Eight track and field championship. 

In 1961, he was named co-captain of the team and was one of the best hurdlers in state.  Won the 330 yard hurdles and set the conference record for the relay in the Mason Dixon Conference meet.  Nicknamed "Smoke" at that meet. 

In 1963, Beals captained the team.  Never lost a hurdle race in a Roanoke College dual meet.
