A Graduate of the University of Virginia, where he was a track & field star, Bast started rebuilding the track and field program at Roanoke in 1947.  It didn't take him long to make a name for himself and the program for the Maroons.

The following year his team won the State's Little Eight Championship.  From 1954-58, Basts' teams captured cross country and track championships in the Mason Dixon Conference.

The track team compiled over 80 wins in 100 meets, completing five unbeaten seasons, nine Little Eight titles, eight Mason Dixon Conference Championships, and two state AAU titles.

In 1982, the C.Homer Bast Athletic Center was dedicated in his name.
