A member of the Monogram Club, Harless participated in three varsity sports at Roanoke. 

He was most known for his skills on the hardwood, lettering four years in basketball.  He was co-captain for the cagers in 1949 and ’50 and was a member of the All-State team as a senior.  That same season he was among the top-20 in nation in foul shooting percentage.

After graduation, Harless was the head basketball coach and assistant football coach at Andrew Lewis High School for six years.  Was also a member of Southwest Virginia Basketball Officials Association.

In 1971-72, he received the Roanoke Valley Kiwanis Award as "Basketball Official of the Year."
