Hoffmann's offense was not what made him a standout. Despite scoring 18 goals and recording 35 career points, Hoffmann's defensive play was what made him a two-time All-American. After earning First Team All-ODAC honors as a senior in 1993, the Homer, NY native went on to earn First Team All-American honors that year. The year before, Hoffmann was named a Third Team All-American on the Maroon team that advanced to the national championship game.

After graduating from Roanoke, Hoffmann earned a tryout with the United States World team, one of just 13 former Division III athletes invited to the tryouts. In the summer of 2002, Hoffmann was an assistant coach with the German national team at the World Championships in Australia. With Hoffmann, the Maroons went 38-21 in four years, won two ODAC championships, and went to NCAA tournament once.
