Played basketball and football for four years at Roanoke, lettering each year.  On the gridiron, Hartley ran with a backfield described at that time as one of the most colorful in the history of Maroon football.

On the basketball court, he starred in the guard position.  Nicknamed "The Sphinx" because he rarely lost control on the field or on the court.  His junior year, Hartley was rated the most valuable man on the team.  A good, steady, reliable player, he was a coach’s delight.

A class officer and member of the Blue Key National Honor Fraternity.
